Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs was the surprise winner BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Beat the heat of Formula One World Champion driver Jenson Button.
It was feared that the occasion which began bright in 1954 would be overshadowed this year by X Factor Simon Cowell. However, the public still voted for their favorite sports personalities in large quantities, although viewing figures suffered by night.
The awards, held in Sheffield last night, was hosted by former tennis star and TV presenter Sport Sue Barker, former footballer and sports commentator Gary Linker and sports TV presenter and Formula One presenter Jake Humphrey.
Champion Tom Daley Diving World won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year and Fabio Capello took Coach of the Year after the FA Cup powerful qualifier World.
Overseas Personality of the Year was awarded to Olympic medal Usain Bolt, winner of three sprint gold medals in Beijing and Team of the Year was a cricket team of men in England, the award being received by Andrew Flintoff for the team.
The lifetime achievement award was given to Seve Ballesteros by video as he was not well enough to attend the ceremony in person. The Golfer's World Championship was awarded the same prize in 1997.
The Helen Rollason Award went to Major Phil Packer, who received a standing ovation during his long walk to the stage to collect his award. Phil Packer, lost both legs while serving in Iraq. Raised £ 1.2m to walk the London Marathon in 13 days. After being presented with his prize, he challenged the audience of sports personalities to help their charity called the British Trust inspiration.
Doreen Adcock won the Unsung Hero Award for his work teaching more than 13,000 people to swim.
The special award was presented to comedian Eddie Izzard for his extraordinary accomplishment of running 43 marathons in 51 days to raise more £ 300,000 for Sport Relief. The award was presented to the winning marathon runner Paula Radcliffe and James Gordon, the star of Gavin & Stacey.
